Working with clients can be challenging if you don’t have a good relationship. Mistrust and lack of understanding can sour a client to creative ideas and derail a project. Here are a few tips to help build a solid relationship so the creativity flourishes.
- Create ownership. It’s important for you as a creative — and equally important for the client — to be fully immersed in a project. By making a connection early and zeroing in on the client’s needs, you take critical steps toward achieving a productive relationship.
- Don’t be afraid to introduce new ideas. Clients want to be innovators in their field, and they come to you to make them look smart. Stretching creatively and putting your personal stamp on a project increases your connection with the client and helps to solidify your partnership.
- Make it fun. Enjoy the time you spend inventing a new identity, look and theme, and keep the lines of communication open. Constructive feedback can help improve a project and is the foundation for a balanced collaboration between you and the client, so don’t take criticism as an insult.
